Download Andy Gullahorn's "Reinventing the Wheel", HERE and click on the NoiseTrade widget. There are times when people who aspire to be journalists need to simply throw their "professional hat" away and unashamedly be a fan. This is that time for me and the person I am a fan of is Andy Gullahorn, one of the most talented song writers I have ever encountered, and the album is Reinventing the Wheel. Gullahorn's preceding album, Room to Breathe, had its moments but Wheel showcases Gullarhorn's finest work.
Let me begin by stating that there are better guitar players and better singers out there than Andy, yet it is his talent at telling stories has me writing this attempt at a review. The folk styling rarely attempts at grandeur, being more comfortable alone with an acoustic guitar, but occasional strings or percussion add enough to keep the listener interested. The song "Desperate Man" is one of the finer examples of his ability to build a song into a crescendo of emotion.

The beauty of Gullahorn's music is that the stories that he tells are ones you and I can identify with, probably because he mines his own life for much of his material. After the initial listen to "That Guy", I proceeded to listen to it 6 more times, the weight of the simple lyrics washing over me. His ability to address weighty issues like God, failure, love, and marriage in a way that the average person can understand does not take away from the profound truths presented. Listening to the song "Give it Time" is worth a weekend's worth on lectures about marriage. And though "More of a Man" made me laugh out loud with lines about hunting, Dora the Explorer and Jean Claude van Damm, it also challenged my perceptions of what makes a man.
I remember reading a review that describes his music as "rich music." Bob Dylan said "Music can save people, but it can't in the commercial way it's being used." I doubt Gullahorn's music will ever sell millions, but his is the music that Dylan was referring to when he said music can save. It is music that people need to hear.
